"Globalisation" is the new magic word. But the promising facade of a globe-spanning communications community with unprecedented freedom and flexibility conceals growing uncertainty: forms of organization we have grown fond of – whether economic, social, political or cultural – are breaking down, to be replaced by a progressive fragmentation of the familiar world. The new digital technologies are speeding up the exchange of information, the transmission and reception of signals, but they rarely lead to any real connection between those involved in the communication.

In the virtual space of the net, social responsibilities dissolve. Classic professional biographies break down from one day to the next, the "flexible person" is challenged both economically and psychologically. He constantly has to reconstitute his splintered identity from fragments, repeatedly re-invent himself. The unstoppable progress in genetic engineering even tempts us to assume that we are just about to enter a "post-human age" in which man is now an obsolescence in the midst of artificial intelligences. In a moderated discussion it is intended to explore the consequences this has for politics, society, cultural values and concepts of communication.

Within a monitor landscape, Norbert Bolz and Matthias Horx will discuss the future of notions of human identity. Video statements from Laurie Anderson to Richard Sennett will counter/comment on the course of the debate. From the original dialogue there will emerge a virtual chorus of ideas and arguments.
