1952-1956 Studied hydraulic mechanics and metallurgy at the Industrial Engineering School of Brno, Czechoslovakia

1956 Completed Bachelor of Engineering degree at the Industrial Engineering School of Brno

1960 Moved to Prague

1960-1965 Attended the Academy of Performing Arts, Faculty of Film and Television. Obtained a diploma in production and direction of documentary films

1962 Met Steina in Prague

1964 Married Steina in Prague

1965 Moved to New York City

1966-1969 Worked as a freelance multi-screen editor and industrial display designer. Started to experiment with electronic sound, stroboscopic projections derived from moving images and light-activated screens, due to those activities becoming involved with video

1971 Co-founded The Electronic Kitchen (later shortened to The Kitchen) an Electronic Media Theater in New York (together with Steina and Andres Mannik)

1973 Moved to Buffalo, New York

1973-1979 Associate Professor for video at the Department of Media Study, SUNY, Buffalo

1975 Untertook his first digital experiments

1980 Moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico

1992 Co-curated the exhibition Eigenwelt der Apparate-Welt (Pioneers of Electronic Art) for Ars Electronica Linz, Austria

2000 Co-foundet with Steina the Art and Science Laboratory

Since 2003 Artist-in-residence at ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe
