Interview

Karsten Löckemann: You come from Elte, a not very well-known small place near Münster. I grew up in Steinfurt, so I know the area very well. Elte is certainly not a bastion of high art where art features high on the promotional agenda. What inspired you to study art, and who encouraged you? It can't have been easy.
Matthias Weischer: I didn't have any direct contact with art and artists. Of course, we did art at school, but that was hardly high-octane stuff. The impetus really came from within. At some point I started to draw, and noticed it was a form of expression that appealed to me. I kept at it, and became quite keen on drawing. I devoured everything that cropped up in my surroundings that had the slightest thing to do with art. There were funny exhibitions of amateur painters and things like that. I combed the whole district around Steinfurt looking at all kinds of rubbish. At the time, I didn't have enough money for longer trips to Cologne or Munich. That’s how I first made contact with art. You start small and take the first steps. Of course, there were books as well. I used to go to the municipal library in Rheine and borrow anything they had on art. That was the first influence I got from the region.
