⁄⁄ Strange experiences in a chinese garden, 2005 manuscript

One night, I lost my way. I stopped two cyclists, a man and a woman, garbage-collectors as it turned out, and in my rudimentary Chinese I asked them for the high-rise where I lived. They did not know it, but the man pointed at his bicycle carrier and, using gestures and words, invited me to look for the way together with them; eventually he even talked me into mounting his carrier. For two or three hours, the three of us biked through nocturnal Beijing, crossing brightly-lit intersections on the ring-roads, through dark side streets, past sleeping housing complexes, stores, construction sites ⁄⁄ ... ⁄⁄
