⁄⁄ Strange experiences in a chinese garden, 2005 manuscript
One night, I lost my way. I stopped two cyclists, a man
and a woman, garbage-collectors as it turned out, and in
my rudimentary Chinese I asked them for the high-rise
where I lived. They did not know it, but the man pointed
at his bicycle carrier and, using gestures and words, invited
me to look for the way together with them; eventually
he even talked me into mounting his carrier. For two or
three hours, the three of us biked through nocturnal Beijing,
crossing brightly-lit intersections on the ring-roads,
through dark side streets, past sleeping housing complexes,
stores, construction sites ⁄⁄ ... ⁄⁄
