About Palmila

Introduction
We, the Institute for Network-Development at ZKM Karlsruhe, have developed a content management system using Userlands Software Frontier.
The goal was to build a server system for the Arts and Culture Community and to represent the ZKM, its instituts, museums and galleries. The System allows every Editor to enter the relevant data directly online using ordinary browsersoftware. Our Newspage is updated daily (on weekdays) and informs the community on events and news in the scene.

The Idea
The Content Management System we developed is working very well. The idea we got: Wouldn't it be great to be able to post, edit or update the data on our server from every place in the world?

So we thought about what would be necessary to realize this idea. It works well with a laptop and a mobilphone, but the weight to carry is way to high. Also the endurance of modern laptops reaches its limit after 3 hours.
So what do we normally all carry around: A mobilphone and an organizer.

As in our department everybody has a palm device, i startet at this point. A mobilephone and a palm device should be a good combination as they are easy to carry and the batterypower allows it to work for several days.

The Prototype
Right now there is a working prototype for PalmOS devices wich uses the infrared port of the palm to connect via mobilphone to the internet. The communication between server and handheld is realized via XML-RPC. Many programms use this protocol wich opens a wide door to this technology to be used for other ContentManagementSystems as well.

The editor is able to post news to the frontpage and edit or post messages to the discussion forum. To provide this code to a larger community, some modifications have to be done.I'd also like to enlarge the functionality.

Right now I'm searching for sponsors because i'd like to use the newest technology to see what is possible and what will be ...

The latest News for this project will always be posted on the first page, so stay tuned.
