Section M/O Logo-culture and Light Graphics

Not long after the invention of the lightbulb, commercial advertising discovered this new medium to employ for its own purposes. The first neon signs lit up the night in Paris in 1912. Currently, young artists in particular are becoming ever more involved with light as an advertising medium. Playing with the spheres of consumption and advertising has an important role in our logo- and trademark-dominated era. Here, we can find LED bands by Jenny Holzer, light boxes by Daniel Pflumm and illuminated brand-name logos by Nic Hess and by Manfred Erjautz. Typographic light works such as those by Sylvie Fleury or Kendell Geers can also often be considered against a backdrop of advertising.
