Section F Minimal Art / Primary Structures

Characteristics of the Minimal art that became prominent in the mid-1960s are the new interplay of work and space, reduced forms and colors, the use of industrial materials and the relinquishing of artistic individuality. Artists established new relationships between beholder, art work and site and demanded the direct perception of space, the object and its materiality. Dan Flavin arranged fluorescent lights in installations and environments in order to transform "finite picture fields into endless surroundings." The films and film and video installations by Pierre Rovère, Paul Sharits, Tony Conrad, Anthony McCall and Woody Vasulka carry the film art of the 1920s to great extremes.
