Peter Cornwell [GB] is director of the Visual Theory Group at Imperial College, London and research fellow at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. He has worked with computer image generation both as an artist and as an engineer for twenty years. After studying painting, he worked on early computer graphics for television with The Moving Picture Company and supercomputer specialist Meiko. As manager of European research and development for Texas Instruments Industrial Systems he developed computer aided design and robotic manufacturing systems. Later he formed Division Inc., a public virtual reality (VR) company in San Francisco, which developed virtual environments for architecture, pharmaceutical and aerospace companies. In 1997 he established the Visual Theory Group in the Department of Computing at Imperial College. He became research fellow at the Royal Academy in 1999 and in 2000 he was made research fellow in the Department of Computing at Imperial College. He worked on virtual environment training systems for spaceflight with NASA and was responsible for the development of Virtual Design Environment, a virtual space authoring system installed widely by major design and engineering corporations.
