Dan Graham war Galeriebesitzer, Kunst- und Kulturtheoretiker, Photograph, Filmproduzent, Performance- und Installationskünstler. Mit seinem Werk der 70er Jahre zählt er zu den Pionieren der Performance- und Videokunst. Zum Hauptthema seiner künstlerischen Arbeit wurde nach diesen Jahren immer mehr die Architektur: Graham konzipierte Projekte, die sich differenziert mit sozialer Interaktion in öffentlichen Räumen auseinandersetzten. Darüber hinaus ist seine schriftstellerische Arbeit ein zentraler Bestandteil seines Gesamtwerkes. Seine Veröffentlichungen reichen von z.B. frühen konzeptuellen Arbeiten, die als Beilagen in Magazinen für den Massenmarkt zu finden waren, über Schriften, die sich mit den Arbeiten zeitgenössischer Künstler auseinandersetzen, bis hin zu Analysen der Popkultur.
