Studied literature, medicine, logic and philosophy in Paris and Vienna. From 1976 to 1981 he was lecturer in the theory of form and, in 1981 Visiting Professor of Design and Art at the Vienna University of the Applied Arts and was Visiting Professor at the College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada. In 1981 he was lecturer in Perception Theory and Professor of Photography at Gesamthochschule in Kassel. Since 1984 he has been Professor of Visual Media at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and Associate Professor of Video and Digital Arts at the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 1989 he headed the Institut für Neue Medien at the Staedlschule in Frankfurt am Main. From 1993 until 1999 he was curator of the Austrian Pavillon at the Biennial in Venice and Artistic Director of the Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Graz. From 1986 until 1995 he was Artistic Director of Ars Electronica, Linz. Currently he is the Director of the ZKM in Karlsruhe.
