Dort verdiente er mit Werbung, Schaufenstergestaltung, Zeitschriftenillustrationen und Coverdesign sein Geld. Er fuhr fort, Zeichnungen und Bücher zu veröffentlichen, bis er sich Anfang der 1960er Jahre auf Comic-Strips Portraitmalerei verlegte. Sein Studio an der 231 East 47th Street wurde unter dem Namen »The Factory« bekannt. Nachdem er Filme gedreht hatte und mit Velvet Underground Performances bestritt, trat die Malerei in den Mittelpunkt seiner Beschäftigung. Er starb im Februar 1987 nach Beginnen der »History of American TV«.
