What theory? Theories are about something even if that aboutness is
constantly subject to revision. What is clear is that the Art & Language
indexing project entailed a suppression of the beholder (consumer (user of
aesthetics, perhaps)) in favour of contributors, participants, players. This
may itself have an "aesthetic" description at a certain distance. Theoretical
and even idle discussion might have broken the artistic shell in which it had
been originally constituted. There would have been not so much a particular
mode of attention individuated as artistic as a possibly distinctive set of
discourse relations, seeking somehow not to disappear into or to be absorbed
into the discourses to which these relations were marginal.
