It is always difficult to identify precisely the alternatives articulated by Art & Language. If you mean to refer to the historical practices of the 1970s, pursued around the time of the Annotations and Index projects, then I'd say that they were not so much resisted as admired from afar. The choices seemed to be "join us" or else. (See question 1 and reply, above.) There is a distinction that needs to be made between the theoretical space and the cultural-social space of Art & Language. The entire cultural space of "alternatives" seems to me to be suspect.
