186 INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEMS There are two qualitative evaluative notions available for IR systems: precision and recall. Quantitatively they are represented by the number of items retrieved and relevant over total relevant items in the collection and the number of items retrieved and relevant over total retrieved in the collection, respectively.
