184 INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEMS The IR system can 'answer' questions only if the questions are properly cued to the data-bank: it can't handle eccentricly formulated queries. Furthermore, each group of language-users has to custom-make their IR system. As such, it demands (a) a high degree of indexical rigidity and (b) an extensive thesaurus.
