131 FALSIFICATION The A & L reaction to falsification was not to retreat to a weaker but less refutable position but to proceed to a stronger and more refutable position. Criticism is linked with the 'growth of knowledge'. Alternatives don't rule each other out in a quest for certainty, but they 'compete' in a Lakatosian 'dialectic' sense.
